Dizzyness & Vestibular Rehabilitation

Feeling dizzy, off-balance, visually overwhelmed, or uncomfortable with movement?

Your vestibular system may be part of the picture.

When your balance system isn't working as it should

Vestibular problems don't always feel like the room is spinning. Sometimes they show up in less obvious ways.

You may notice:

  • Dizziness, vertigo, or lightheadedness
  • Feeling off-balance or unsteady
  • Motion sensitivity or nausea
  • Discomfort in grocery stores, crowds, or visually busy environments
  • Feeling overwhelmed by scrolling or fast-moving visual information
  • Blurred or unstable vision when moving your head
  • Feeling worse with faster activities like skiing, biking, running, or driving
  • Persistent dizziness or balance problems following a concussion

If movement or busy environments make you feel “off,” your vestibular system may be worth assessing.

WHAT IS THE VESTIBULAR SYSTEM?

Your vestibular system is located in the inner ear and helps your brain understand where your head is, how it's moving, and how to keep you balanced and visually stable.

It works together with your eyes, neck, joints, and feet to help you understand where you are in space.

UNDERSTANDING WHAT'S DRIVING YOUR SYMPTOMS

Your assessment may look at:

  • Balance and walking
  • Responses to movement in different directions
  • Head movements and vestibular function
  • Eye movements and eye-head coordination
  • Neck movement and proprioception
  • Motion and visual sensitivity
  • Your response to movement and exercise

The goal is to understand which systems may be contributing to your symptoms so your rehabilitation can be more specific to you.

VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION

Vestibular rehabilitation isn't one-size-fits-all

Depending on what we find, rehabilitation may include balance and gait exercises, eye-head coordination, visual and vestibular drills, neck work, manual therapy, and gradual exposure to movements that provoke your symptoms.

The goal is to gradually rebuild your ability to tolerate movement with more confidence.

Get back to moving confidently

For many people in Revelstoke, balance isn't just about standing on one leg.

It's about being able to ski through variable terrain, ride a bike, climb, trail run, drive mountain roads, and move through your environment without feeling dizzy or disoriented.

Rehabilitation can progress toward the activities and environments that matter most to you.
